Excellence Advantage Inspirations
Quarterly Summary

Perhaps there was an article you hoped to come back to and then it slipped past.

Here’s a summary of articles from the last quarter. Perhaps there is one that you want to delve into.

Sharing the stage with Dell Anderson from Renew both at NatCon and Quest were certainly highlights. His visionary and authentic leadership shines bright. He has generously taken calls with a number of you and I am glad to make that connection for you.

When Leadership is a Team Sport

When leadership is a team sport, your organization doesn’t just get better—it becomes a model of what’s possible for the people and communities you serve.

My hope is that these stories from the Quest for Excellence—and leaders like Dell Anderson, Maulik Joshi, Tom Raffio, Brian Lassiter, and Tom Huebner—will inspire you.

What if we’re measuring the wrong things?

I recently sat down with Dr. Rhiannon Winsor, host of VBCare’s The Exam Room podcast. In a two-part episode we explored challenges many leaders are facing—but few are naming directly.

A few takeaways that stood out:

Transformation takes time—and leadership patience is non-negotiable.

Measuring activity is not the same as measuring impact.

Individual productivity-driven metrics can unintentionally undermine teamwork.

The most meaningful improvements happen at the system level—not the individual level.

Buying Technology for RHTP Is Easy. Driving RHTP Outcomes Is Not.

RHTP funding is arriving. Vendor calls are increasing. Demos are being scheduled.

And right now, many rural healthcare organizations are about to step into one of the most common — and costly — mistakes in digital health. The Vendor Trap.

Here’s how it works:
➡️ An organization finds a technology they like

➡️ They sign a contract

➡️ They assume the vendor will handle the rest

The workflows. The clinician buy-in. The training. The outcomes.

This #TelehealthTuesday article from my collaborator Christian Milaster breaks down what the Vendor Trap actually is, how to recognize it before you’re in it — and what successful RHTP implementation actually requires.

Because CMS isn’t measuring what you purchased. They’re measuring what you achieved.

The part that actually determines success:

🔹 Clinical workflows redesigned around the new tool

🔹 Clinicians engaged before the demo, not after

🔹 Protocols for escalation, documentation, follow-up

🔹 Training built for every role that will touch the program

🔹 Change management to bring the whole team along

Technology is the tip of the iceberg. Implementation is everything underneath.

From Burnout to Breakthrough

It was terrific to see so many of you at NatCon in Denver recently. It was great to share the stage with Dell Anderson for this presentation: From Burnout to Breakthrough.

Many told us it was their favorite presentation of the conference. Dell’s vulnerability in sharing his learnings and together sharing the approach and results struck a chord.

This article is for others who may benefit who didn’t get to see it live.

The case study write-up can be found here as well.

The Fastest Access to the Best Care

Whether you are a resident living in rural America, have a family member who does, or are seeking to understand innovative ways to improve rapid access to emergent, time-sensitive emergency healthcare services across a large geographic area, this piece may offer some ideas worth exploring.

In this whitepaper, my close colleague, Christian Milaster, and I share some ideas that may be happening soon in your neck of the woods.

Implementing well…

Knowing what to deploy is only half the battle.

The harder question — the one that determines whether a program is still running and delivering results three years from now — is how to deploy it.

This article offers things to consider to ensure you are implementing for long term success.
