My Look Back, Look Ahead

For each of the past several years I have taken the time, in a peaceful space, to look back and look ahead.

One of my coaching clients suggested that I share this for others like yourself who are considering a similar practice as the year turns.

I don’t rush the process – not when I start, not how long I take, not when I finish. I wait until I feel ready. Although I generally like to begin around the turn of one year into the next.

I typically take a couple of days for things to unfold. I don’t conclude until I feel that something special has emerged.

Here are some of the questions and considerations I ponder. I consider each, but only write to those that speak to me.

I look back in reflection, seeking to uncover any insights:

The wisest decision I made this past year was:

The biggest lesson I learned:

The biggest risk I took:

The most important thing I did for myself:

The most important thing I did for others:

Who are the people who influenced me the most?

What needs to be released?

What is the best thing I discovered about myself?

The three biggest challenges of the year and what I learned from overcoming them:

The three greatest accomplishments from the last year:

The past year in three words…I choose three words that define my past year:

I typically pause here, sometimes for a walk, other times for a new day…I find a way to release this past, yet inspired by the wisdom I am carrying from it.

I look forward in contemplation, seeking to set my intentions for the year ahead:

Daring to dream big, I envision what the year ahead will look like and how I will feel when I experience it.

What brings me joy?

How do I want to spend my time?

How do I want to BE?

The best advice I can give myself for the year ahead:

This year will be special because:

The three things I want to achieve the most:

Three ways in which I will assist others:

My ONE word for the year ahead (a word or phrase to symbolize the year ahead):

Finally, I set my intentions for the year generally in these five categories (Wellness; Essence; Learning; Relationships; Livelihood):

I capture this in some sort of creative way each year.
